The tectonic setting of Albania, influenced by the collision with the Adria microplate, is divided into two structural domains: an external compressional zone and an internal extensional one. Two main fault systems characterize the region—the longitudinal system (NW–SE to NNW–SSE), consisting of thrust and reverse faults, and the transversal system (NE–SW), comprising strike-slip faults. The Lushnje–Elbasan transverse fault, oriented NNE, is associated with the Dumrea diapiric dome and the Elbasan Quaternary graben.
Between 1923 and 2023, the Dumrea diapiric zone and its surroundings experienced 12 moderate to strong earthquakes (magnitude 4.5–6.2), including significant events in 1923, 1959, 1990, 2007, 2014, and 2020. A major earthquake (M6.2) struck on September 1, 1959, near Ura e Kuçit village, followed by numerous foreshocks and aftershocks.
This study analyzes the focal mechanisms of these seismic events, using data from the Institute of Seismology of Albania and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). Findings indicate that the Dumrea fault zone exhibits both trans tensional and transgressional behavior.
The Dumrea diapiric dome and surrounding fault systems form an active seismotectonic zone in central Albania, posing a notable seismic risk to nearby urban centers such as Lushnje, Elbasan, and Berat.
