Industrial activities in the Jiu River basin, especially coal mining, have generated a significant impact on water quality over time, by releasing variable concentrations of heavy metals into the environment. This paper analyzes the trends of variation over time of the degree of heavy metal pollution in the Jiu River, considering the direct influence of the extractive industry in the area. The study is based on data collected from multiple water quality monitoring campaigns, covering an extended period, and aims to identify the main metals involved, the pollution sources and the possible effects on the aquatic ecosystem. The methodology used includes physico-chemical analyses of water, correlated with hydrological data and information on mining activity. The results obtained highlight significant variations in heavy metal concentrations, depending on the intensity of mining operations and the environmental measures implemented. The conclusions highlight the need for effective strategies to reduce pollution and protect the Jiu River ecosystem, given the long-term impact of the extractive industry on water resources.
