It is known that environmental problems are numerous, having a global impact. The quality of the environment involves increasing attention from all countries and requires the urgent adoption and implementation of measures to protect it.
Sustainable development is justified by making environmental protection expenditures, especially since the state's fiscal policy ensures the achievement of sustainable development objectives.
Through this article, the authors emphasize the need for financial resources in the activity of improving the environment in this context of the sustainable development of the planet and keeping it in the best possible conditions for future generations.
The purpose of the article is to analyze environmental expenditures and investments in Romania and identify the main environmental areas in which funds are transferred, but focused primarily on the implementation of sustainable development with the objective of waste management.
The methodology used involved studying the specialized literature, along with statistical data obtained from various sources, analysis, drawing diagrams and formulating conclusions. The structure of environmental protection expenditures by producer groups was established for the period 2012–2022. In the structure of environmental protection expenditures, those for waste management dominate, especially in the case of public administration.
We can conclude that the environment, considered a "factor of life", must be protected from degradation, excessive consumption of resources and sustainable production, so as to ensure prosperity for all people.
