International cooperation in geoscience that has become an integral part of modern societies, involves cross-language communications. This necessitates acquisition of knowledge of foreign language and, above all, foreign lexis. It becomes rather important in geosciences, since it helps communicate with foreign professionals, use imported equipment, read foreign papers on the subject and publish papers in foreign languages. The need to facilitate efficient learning of foreign lexis calls for a special customized learning tool.
The authors of this paper developed a Russian-English and English-Russian online dictionary LexSite, that was first published in 2009 as a translators? dictionary. Its new release (2019) includes a set of new tutoring features named LexTutor. This educational technology can be used for learning English lexis by Russian-speaking students and learning Russian lexis by English-speaking students. The new tool is available in public domain; it enables teachers to create geoscience dictionaries as a learning aid for their students. Students also can create geoscience dictionaries on their own in response to their personal needs. With the new toolset users can edit their dictionaries, download or print them and learn the content using virtual flash cards.
The flash cards are automatically formed in the course of personal dictionary development. Since learning with flash cards is one of the most effective and popular means of vocabulary building, this particular tool is very important. Another feature lets users test their knowledge of the lexis and shows analysis of statistical data collected in the course of tests.
The paper demonstrates a geoscience dictionary created by the authors and describes the learning functions offered by the LexTutor platform using that dictionary as an example.
