As far as environmental challenges in the world become more serious and cross-cutting, higher environmental education plays an important role in development of sustainable society. The aim of this article is to describe the specification and trends in higher environmental education in the Russian Federation under the ongoing processes of urbanization, anthropogenic impact and changes in demand of the labor market. Besides, some comparisons with overseas universities are given. The paper deals with the changes in educational standards and actualization of the Federal educational standards of higher education in the field ?Ecology and Natural management?- which is one of three fields in environmental education in Russia. The recently updated professional competences that are formulated for implementation at all universities of Russia are considered.
