This article is dedicated to the peculiarities of geology development in higher educational establishments in Russia in 20-21 centuries exemplified by two Tomsk universities ? Tomsk State University and Tomsk Polytechnic University. The theme is discussed in regards to transformation of the finance system for geological practices during the transition from planned to a market economy. This transformation has led to a slack demand for some types of geological works, which further brings us to discrepancy between the system of geological education and system of geological industry. This article aims to find a solution for the stated issue. Modern labour market has suffered extensively from weak demand on geologists trained in classical universities, such as TSU. This situation forces students of classical universities to change their academic program track either in the process of studying (choosing courses not on regional geological works, but on the search and exploration of mineral deposits) or after graduation from the university.
