The article examines the experience of using geographic information systems (GIS) in the preparation of specialists of geographers in higher education institutions of Ukraine. Educational and professional training programs for geographers at the Kherson State University are represented as a basic model. The main accent is put on differences of programs according to the existing three specialties, for which the training is carried out: 103 Earth Sciences, 106 Geography and 014.17 Secondary Education (Geography). This paper proposes the information about subject-component elements of the educational process and geoinformation packages and resources that can be used in the formation of the corresponding professional competencies. The article gives the basic principles and forms of work with GIS, both in classroom and in the field conditions (during the practice). Considerable importance is given to the use of online platforms (for example, ArcGIS Online) for distance learning, as well as ongoing practical laboratory and practical work. The peculiarities of using GIS in bachelor and master's programs are indicated. The role of specialization in the transition from general principles of preparation of bachelors to highly specialized master's programs with the execution of diploma papers in the form of GIS-projects is considered and substantiated. The basic topics, plans and examples of relevant geoinformation projects are presented. Also the bases of passing the practices (state institutions and organizations) that use GIS in their work as the main platforms for consolidating the acquired skills are reviewed in this article.
