Directional couplers are widely used in microstrip technology, but their dimensions are tied to the operating frequency. Since the smaller the frequency, the longer the longitudinal length of the quarter-wave segments and the greater the overall dimensions of the coupler. For this reason, use miniaturization, which allows to reduce the area occupied by the device on the substrate, with negligible loss in performance. In addition, there is an economy of the material used in the manufacture of the microstrip device. The study investigated the design of a four-port coupler with a central frequency of 1900 MHz. The dimensions of this device were reduced with the help of original electrodynamic structures, which are placed instead of quarter-wave segments. Such a replacement of the segments with the proposed constructions made it possible to reduce the size of the device relative to the dimensions of the traditional design by 73.5%, while retaining the characteristics of the device in a wide frequency range. The simulation was carried out in the program NI-AWR Design Environment, which greatly simplifies and speeds up the design process of directional couplers. A model of the proposed device was also made to test its performance. The experimental characteristics obtained using a R&S vector network analyzer showed good similarity with the simulation results.
