In the vegetable growing field, the germination is an important indicator in the appreciation of seeds quality. The process takes place over a variable period of time being influenced by a number of factors such as species, environmental conditions and the treatment applied to the seeds.
We used citrate - stabilized gold nanoparticles to prevent the occurrence of fungi and to stimulate the germination process of carrot seeds. The gold nanoparticles were synthesized by mixing and heating aqueous solutions of chloroauric acid and sodium citrate, in accordance with the Turkevich method. Our investigation was focused on the influence of gold nanoparticles on the germination process of carrot seeds (Daucus carota convar. sativus (Alef.)), by identifying the optimal concentration of gold nanoparticles solution and the duration of treatment. The carrot seeds were placed for germination in an environmental test chamber in order to eliminate the variations of environmental parameters. The results highlight the stimulating effect of gold nanoparticles on the germination of carrot seeds, determinations being made on the dynamics of the daily germination. The total percentage of seeds germinated each day for each variant was noted, as well as two other parameters: the germination rate and the germination velocity. These parameters are necessary for a more objective evaluation of the effects of the applied treatments. |
