The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is a functional structure of the brain that regulates the penetration into the Central nervous system of many foreign, toxic substances and compounds that penetrate into the blood or formed in the body itself, including drugs that can harm the nerve cells of the brain and spinal cord. BBB is not an insurmountable barrier separating the Central nervous system from the General internal environment. Its impermeability depends on the concentration and amount of substances in the blood, as well as the state of the body, the duration of the substance in the body, from external influences and other causes. The functions of the blood-brain barrier can be divided as follows:
1.Local management of blood flow in the brain, depending on the needs of specificanatomical areas; 2.Metabolic neuronal metabolism and neurotransmission; 3.Protective function against dangerous and neurotoxic substances. The anatomical elements that make up the structure of the barrier, not only protect the brain, but also contribute to the excretion of metabolic products, as well as regulate its life and provide nutrition. These elements are endothelial cells of the brain capillaries, astrocytes, neurons and pericytes, which are functionally and anatomically linked. |
