This paper presents the stages of embryonic and postembryonic development in Polyodon spathula (Polyodontidae) under the conditions of the acclimatization area at Fish Culture Research and Development Station Nucet, Dambovita county, Romania. Embryonic development at the paddlefish is carried out in the temperature range of 14-18o C with an optimum of 16o C. For the induction of maturation and ovulation, the Nerestin 5A hormone was used. The size of the eggs is between 2.7-3 mm and light gray to gray-black in color. Embryonic development of paddlefish comprises 36 stages. Stage 1 begins immediately after fertilization when the eggs are oriented with both poles on the horizontal axis. After successive transformations, in the 36th stage (after about 210 degrees-hours, the time of mass hatching) the body is gray, the tail is now completely straight and the head has a longitudinal section up to the pericardial cavity. The postembryonic development period is carried out starting with the first day of hatching, corresponding to stage 37, with a further 10 distinct stages in the acclimation conditions. The larvae range from 10-12 mm, they have a voluminous, ovoid and granular yolk-sac. In stage 46, ten days after hatching, the larvae have lengths of 14-16 mm and weights of 30 mg. The stomach, free of vitellus is placed on the left side; larvae pass into active feeding. The results are essential for knowing the paddlefish requirements and the factors that influence growth and development at these stages in order to substantiate technological processes.
