The aim of the article is to get acquainted with what woonerf streets are by indicating their main features and functions. Particular emphasis will be put on how to design this type of street. First of all, an attempt will be made to indicate these communication routes, which can be transformed into woonerf type zones. Then, the physical elements of the street will be selected which need to be changed or improved. Eventually, the possibilities of arrangement the street area will be presented. In addition will be point out the chances of implementation of the assumptions which are dependent on among others from society participation or local legal conditions.
The methodology is based on literature studies and on own research. Literature studies have attempted to define what a woonerf street is and how it should be designed to maximize the comfort of its non-motorized users. In own research, an exemplary street analysis was made, which could potentially be redesigned into a woonerf street. The research covered among others analysis of functional, technical and behavioral quality of the street and analysis of the activity of its users. The research results are presented in description, tabulations, diagrams and graphical models.
Woonerf streets are one of the types of streets that, when they are properly designed, can significantly increase the activity of people who are using them, contributing not only to improving their quality of life, but also to increase the value of space and buildings located near to them. Due to the fact that woonerf streets are created much less frequently in the eastern Europe, for example in Poland than it does in the Netherlands or Germany, it seems reasonable to collect information about their design, which may contribute to increasing knowledge and give some tools for creation of proper space analysis and its suitable shaping.
