The civil engineers have a responsibility to society to offer best possible solutions in order to design more sustainable buildings. A way to incorporate sustainability concepts by the structural engineers is the attempt to reduce both material consumption requirements and energy use during all phases of design. In a sustainability focused society, the amount of the matter resulted from a structural design according to the norms, may be of key importance. Nowadays, structural engineers are trained to design for member efficiency, but an efficient choice of the topology of the system-type is closely tied to overall project sustainability. This study investigates a structural design methodology that focuses on generation of low-cost steel triangular lattice transmission line towers by size and topology optimization method.
Static wind loading will be employed in developing designs of lattice towers. Guidance for predicting the effect of wind on lattice structures is provided by EN 1993-3-1 [1]. The research describes the mathematical formulation through the optimization procedure. A MATLAB program has been developed to solve the fail-safe optimal problem for triangular lattice steel towers and to minimize tower weight. Numerical examples illustrate the capability of optimization scheme to create and offer economical topology solutions, because it found better topologies than the traditional design. |
