The Forest Code of the Russian Federation prescribes the rational use of forest resources (Article 114). The total area of the Arkhangelsk region, covered by shrinking trees, is the territory of 9 forest districts. The large scale of dying pine forests in the region requires the solution of the issue of the use of deadwood. Evaluation of the quality and strength characteristics of wood from dying forests will determine the way to use such wood. The main qualitative characteristics of timber in dying forests can be reduced to determining the strength characteristics of wood samples and the degree of their biodegradation. The purpose of this study is to determine the mechanical properties of wood from desiccated forests. The article presents the results of determining the mechanical properties of dry wood samples using the technique of compressing the sample along the fibers. This method allows determining the ability of such wood to resist destruction from mechanical forces. Experimental studies were carried out in accordance with standard methods on the testing machine AG-50kNX SHIMADZU. Tests have shown high uniformity of strength properties and the density of pinewood samples in each experiment. At the same time, a comparative analysis of the indicators of the compressive strength of wood from dry stands and freshly chopped wood confirmed that the mechanical properties of such wood are within the normal range. The test results allow us to develop a further method for studying wood from desiccated plantations depending on their degree of biological damage
