The applied research focused on the stabilization process of unstable soils has pointed out the possibility of using different types of organic fibers and eco-friendly binders in terms of their effects on mechanical performance characteristics, cost savings and environmental impact. The experimental applications carried out under small-scale laboratory conditions aim to demonstrate the applicability and effectiveness of bio-composite wool-based products mixed with different binders in clayey stabilization works or soil reinforcement structures. One of the main goals of using organic fibers as reinforcement/consolidation elements in soil structures is to prevent the appearance of fissures or shrinkage cracks, mainly caused by rapid and non-uniform drying. For this purpose, various testing on molded specimens were performed to assess the level of influence given by wool-based products on improving the mechanical behavior of soil-binder mixtures. The experimental planning aimed to select different dosages of wool fibers waste, stabilizer agents for preparing the mixtures, manufacturing and conditioning the specimens, as well as specific laboratory testing for assessing the performance characteristics according to application fields, respectively geotechnical and environmental engineering. The results indicate that an optimal reinforcement or stabilization ratio using wool fibers and binders with environmental benefits can lead to a reduction of shrinkage potential and noticeable enhancement of compressive strength. The topic addressed is in line with the environmental and sustainable development strategies and with the examples of good practices carried out at international level on recycling and reusing of organic fiber wastes as composite in building materials or unstable soil reinforcement works.
