Stone columns are one of the most-used technologies of soil improvement in Slovakia. The stone columns installed using the vibro-replacement technology cause the change in the stress state and the properties of the surrounding soil. These changes are often not taken into account in the design. The paper deals with determine the change of the stress state and oedometer modulus in the soil around a single stone column. The calculations have been prepared in the form of a parametric study. The selected properties of the soil represented clay of intermediate plasticity of different consistency. Two different calculation methods were used, i.e., numerical modelling and analytical approach. The numerical models were created as axisymmetric models using Plaxis geotechnical software. The soils were modelled using the hardening soil material model. The analytical models were based on the cavity expansion theory. The cavity expansion theory seems to be one of the most appropriate analytical methods for a given study because it simulates creating a cylindrical space and the horizontal displacement of the soil to the surrounding area, which is very similar to the real installation process of a stone column. The results of the study showed that the radial stresses and oedometer modules determined using both methods were slightly different. Increasing the shear strength properties of soil causes an increase in the difference between radial stresses computed using both methods used. The study presented showed that the results computed using the cavity expansion theory are more conservative than the results computed using numerical modelling.
