The paper deals with the problem of avoiding karst and suffosion development upon projecting engineering structures in the areas of covered karst. It is shown that in case the depth of subsurface part of buildings with deep-seated foundations may be varied depending on the geological structure, the choice of foundation depth should be aimed at preventing possible karst and suffusion development. This approach is exemplified by the case of Bol?shoi Theater building reconstruction in the center of Moscow. A well-grounded choice of the depth of foundation units and protective engineering structures permitted designers to rule out the development of karst and suffusion and to mitigate the influence of reconstruction on the geological and hydrogeological conditions in the adjacent area.
