In Kazakhstan the marine sections of the boundary deposits of the Bashkirian and Moscovian Stages are located in the Zhungar-Balkhash region within the carbonate-terrigenous, carbonate and, less commonly, carbonate-type rock units. The most well-known and studied sections are situated in the North-Eastern Balkhash Lake region (the Tastykuduk formation) where in the boundary deposits of the Kungesai and the Tastykuduk sections (the Sayak synclinorium) there are faunas of ammonoids, foraminifers, corals, bryozoans, conodonts, brachiopods, the poorly preserved flora also occurring rarely. During recent decades the Bashkirian-Moscovian boundary deposits of the Sandyktas formation in the Sandyktas mountains entering into the Central Zhungarian ranges (the Borotaly synclinorium) which also contain the abundant faunas of ammonoids, foraminifers, corals, bryozoans and brachiopods have been investigated comprehensively.
