Ensuring the stability of underground construction remains a challenge in terms of coal mining. The implementation of effective coal mining technology facilitates high rates of operations and simultaneous exposure of large-scale rocks. This problem is relevant both for Ukraine, where underground coal mining is the main one and for Kazakhstan, where the transition to combined open-underground mining is also underway. Supporting the mined-out space under complicated geological conditions requires an in-depth analysis of factors affecting the stability of rock openings [1].
Hence, the natural step preceding the excavation design is the study of the strength and deformation properties of rocks, which traditionally consists of sampling on the site and testing the specimens in the laboratory or ?in situ? with approved standard methods. The test result is a statistical set of values related to strength or deformation modulus, which is usually processed by descriptive statistics. The researcher could observe a significant variation of strength with respect to mean value at this stage, which is due to the rock mass heterogeneity. Failure of non-consideration of this variation can lead to design errors. It should be noted that only specimens taken from the homogeneous (?good?) part of the probe are involved in laboratory tests because the sample extracted from the jointed part of the rock mass can be broken before the trial. This means that laboratory tests give a certain ?ideal? strength characteristic, which differs significantly from the strength of a heterogeneous and structurally disturbed rock mass. This dissimilarity can be considered by various methods based on additional rock mass examination [2, 3]. |
