This article deals with the forming of sheet metal on a bending machine. The bending of sheet metal cut shapes or clippings is a very common operation in many companies. Oftentimes, many of these companies deal with the issue of how to bend the sheet metal to the required precision, especially while complying with the required bending angle. The sheet metal is bent correctly while it is in between the tools of the machine. However, stress develops in the material during bending and this stress remains in the material. This stress is called residual stress. This residual stress causes a spring-back effect, which means the sheet metal bends against the direction of bending once it is taken out of the machine. This whole article deals with this phenomenon in more detail. This article describes the spring-back effect, why it occurs and whether or not it can be prevented. This article describes all the factors that influence the size of the spring-back effect. I will introduce methods to determine the size of the spring-back. I will also outline the methods that are used in practice in order to minimize this phenomenon. I will not forget to describe the basic concepts, like neutral fibre or the K-Factor, which is frequently used in CAD software in order to determine the unfold size of the bent part. In the conclusion, I will summarize which of the methods used work best to eliminate of minimize this undesired phenomenon. I will outline the direction that research in this area should take.
