ASSESMENT OF AIRBORNE GEOPHYSICAL DATA FOR GEOLOGICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT IN PARTS OF LOPPA AND KVAENANGEN MUNICIPALITIES, TROMS AND FINNMARK COUNTY, NORWAY.

The Geological Survey of Norway, in 2019, collected helicopter borne geophysical data in parts of Loppa and Kv?nangen municipalities, in Northern Norway. The objective of the airborne survey was to obtain a dense high-resolution magnetic, electromagnetic and radiometric data set over the surveyed area. These data are required for the enhancement of the general understanding of the regional geology of the area. Adjoining areas covered by previous airborne surveys in 2014 were merged with the current data. The studied area belongs to the Seiland Igneous Province (SIP), located at the northernmost part of the Caledonian orogenic belt, far north of the Arctic Circle. The SIP consists of numerous mafic and ultramafic plutons emplaced into a sedimentary succession indicative of a continental setting. The topography of the Seiland Igneous Province is very rough with steep mountain sides down to the sea and peaks up to about 1.000 m a.s.l., while the central parts of the islands are glaciated. In such harsh conditions the use of helicopter was the best options for surveying the area. The survey incorporated the use of a Hummingbird 5-frequency electromagnetic system supplemented by a high-sensitivity cesium magnetometer, gamma-ray spectrometer, radar altimeter and a GPS navigation system. Flight path indicators were used to ensure accurate acquisition of the geophysical data. The processed data were used to extract the lineaments from various airborne datasets e.g. magnetic, gamma-ray spectrometry using Centre for Exploration Targeting (CET), a third-party extension tool available in Oasis Montaj by Geosoft. Furthermore, the processed gamma-ray data were used to estimates the ground concentration of Cs-137 and to evaluate the environmental consequences due to spread of Cs-137 after the Chernobyl accident.
