The onshore Thermaikos basin is the northwestern extension of the offshore Thermaikos basin, located at the area west of Thessaloniki, in northern Greece. It consists a sedimentary basin, where thick sediments dating from Paleogene to Quaternary are overlaying the older ophiolite and deep-sea Mesozoic formations of Axios geotectonic zone. Thermaikos basin, both offshore and onshore, has been considered as a hydrocarbon promising area, with a proven gas field in offshore Epanomi area in Thessaloniki gulf, hence a number of geological and geophysical surveys has been realized during the previous decades, along with well drilling, that gave important results concerning the basin?s evolution and the possible hydrocarbon traps it may contains. Several of those older geophysical data were utilized, including gravity, aeromagnetic and seismic data, and, with the aid of well and logging data from a number of other surveys, processed in order to construct two-dimensional depth models of the basin. The needed transformations of gravity and magnetic fields were, also, carried out, and the corresponding maps were constructed in order to study the geographic locations of the fields? anomalies and their relations with the geologic regime of the onshore basin. From the interpretation of the results, the existence of underground geologic structures that could contain hydrocarbon reserves was confirmed. These structures could, also, serve as storages for natural gas in order to ensure the country?s energy autonomy
