The investigation of the ambient seismic noise recorded by the Bulgarian Antarctic seismic station LIVV over four polar summers from 2015 to 2020 is presented in the paper. The method for evaluating the Power Spectral Density and Probability Density Functions is applied to study the distribution of the seismic noise in a period interval from 0.02 s to 30 s. The method is widely applied in seismological practice of the Seismological Society for carrying out both fundamental and practical scientific projects.
For a more detailed study of the nature of the noise at the LIVV station and the various influencing factors, the resulting noise levels are explored at two sub-intervals - below 1 s and above 1 s and compared to the High and Low Global Noise Models. The noise levels observed within the first sub-interval are situated quite below the High Noise Model curve and the noise variations are affected mostly by the weather conditions. The seismic signals produced by the glacier movements are observed at this sub-interval also. The dominant feature in the noise spectra in the second sub-interval is the double-frequency peak. The noise levels are close to the High Noise Model curve which is typical behavior of coastal seismic stations worldwide. Finally, the spectra of the noise recorded by the LIVV seismic station are evaluated in respect of different site selections. The distribution of the Power Spectral Density of the registered ambient noise is used to evaluate the performance of the seismic station. It is concluded that the station is well-constructed and the used equipment has characteristics able to ensure registration of seismic data with different nature such as tectonic and glacier events. The data can be used to study seismicity and Earth structure in Antarctic region. |
