The idea of the Hercynian Paleozoic age of the Turanian platform foundation is widespread among geologists, giving way to an opinion of its having no prospects for oil and gas.
New seismic and geological data obtained in the south of the Turanian platform, within the South Mangyshlak downfold system in Kazakhstan and the Asseke-audan trough in Uzbekistan, support the authors? idea on a new Paleozoic floor promising oil and gas in this area. Results of the analysis and comparison of the well sections prove the regional distribution of the grey-coloured terrigenous-carbonate thickness of the analogue of the Berkutian suite in the Mountainous Mangyshlak and the existence of a single marine sedimentary basin in the south of the Turanian platform during the Late Carboniferous and Early Permian times. Strong dislocation of Paleozoic and Lower Triassic sediments in the Central Mangyshlak zone is an outcome of the trough inversion occurred as an echo of spreading processes in the Late Permian Mesothetis.
The Upper Paleozoic sediments in the south of the Turanian platform are poorly dislocated, characterized by high content of organic matter, and as such have prospects for oil and gas exploration.
