The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is considered a flexible and efficient
mathematical tool in approaching the complex decision processes. The AHP method
allows the reduction of the complex decisions to comparisons by pairs and, finally, to
the synthesis of the results, contributing to the capture of the subjective and objective
aspects of the decision. Also, the AHP method allows the check of the coherence for the
evaluations made by the decision makers, thus leading to the reduction of the prejudices
in the decision-making process. In the industrial applications, where the problems are
particularly complex, it is necessary to structure the decision-making process in a
hierarchy form, in order to manage multicriteria quantitative and qualitative problems.
This step is particularly important, and usually requires the involvement of experts, so
that, the essential criteria for evaluation are not missed out. In this paper we have
focused on a comparative study between the processes from two automatic cutting
equipment types used in the shipbuilding industry: a plasma cutting machine Powermax
and an oxy-fuel cutting machine. Such comparative study, by Analytic Hierarchy
Process (AHP) method, has the role to facilitate the correct decision making regarding
the choice of the optimal automatic cutting equipment type used in this industry. The
study aims to present a way in which the decision maker (shipyard) can determine the
equipment that shall be purchased, based on different criteria, taking into account, at the
same time, the technologies used, but also the material types used in shipbuilding
industry. The paper presents the practical and computational aspects involved in the
AHP method, pointing out the adequacy of the method in engineering applications. The
numerical simulations were performed in Windows Excel platform.
