Academic rankings can be referred to as a tool of external evaluation of university
performance, and a crucial role that the rankings play now in government decisions to fund university research around the world is undoubtful, despite all the ambiguity and skewness of rankings methodologies. Having said that the publication productivity and citation impact are important criteria of rankings evaluation, not only university management needs to be sure that the rankings trajectory is well applied, or incorporated into publication strategy. The researchers themselves should have easy and instant access to customized service helping them at least better understand the rankings dimension of their publication activities. This article presents hands-on experience of ITMO University in designing and applying special algorithmic model aimed to monitor and evaluate the personal contribution of university authors - through their publications indexed by Scopus - to QS and THE subject areas. The sources - such as an author's profile, publications indexed by Scopus database, rankings subject, year of rankings release as well as the correspondence matrix of ASJC codes and rankings subject areas - form the basis of a software module which allows an author to see the distribution of his/her publications into corresponding rankings subjects. Likewise, the module enables the author to choose publication sources which will allow to enhance the personal and institutional performance in the given subject rankings. |
