Soil erosion by water is one of the kinds of soil degradation that creates challenges for soil management worldwide. Erosion risk potential is a result of combination of various erosion factors. Every soil can be affected by water erosion however, some soils are more prone to this process than the other. On the other hand, water erosion causes changes in the soil properties of the affected area. The aim of the study was to investigate the change in some of the most fundamental soil properties caused by erosion processes ongoing on the medium-fine Stagni-Haplic Luvisols in Kolinany, Slovakia. Undisturbed core soil samples were taken from the bottom of the 0.5 m deep erosion gully and the nearby agricultural soil not affected by the concentrated flow in spring 2016. The various physical soil properties such as dry bulk density, particle density, porosity, soil aeration and soil water content were evaluated in the laboratory using standard methods. The gravimetric soil water content was higher in the erosion gully by 38%. The mean dry bulk density of soil altered by water erosion process was 1.65 g.cm-3 and it was higher by 12% than in the non-affected soil. In contrary, porosity was lower by 10% in comparison with the soil out of gully. The difference was observed also for particle density that is generally considered as a very stable soil property. However, this difference (increase by 4%) was smaller in comparison to other observed changes of soil properties in the erosion gully. The study confirmed the alternation of soil properties in the agricultural land due to concentrated flow as a result of water erosion process. This process causes the loss of soil production potential and there is a need for an application of the erosion control measures at the site.
