In current times of increasing weather extremes and climate change, there is a request for cheap and also high-quality agricultural products. It is important to fertilize soils and improve their physical and chemical properties to increase an agricultural production. To improve soil properties are used various organic materials, and biochar is one of them. Biochar, a product of thermal degradation of biomass, helps to improve the hydro-physical properties of the soil. It is produced from biomass by pyrolysis process, what means thermochemical decomposition of organic material at temperatures from 300° C to 1000° C with reduced access of oxygen. The interest of researchers began to focus on applications of burned organic waste into soil in the 80's of the 20th century. They were inspired by Amazon area where the soils called Terra Preta were made by massive input of wood burnt (similar to biochar). These soils have a high content of organic material and retain a higher production potential than the surrounding soils. In this paper, we deal with soil moisture changes in silt loam soil at plots with applied biochar in amount of 20 t.ha-1 and at plots without biochar during vegetation period in 2019. The cultivated crop was maize (Zea mays). Soil moisture was measured by 5TM sensors in 5 minutes interval. Our results confirmed the conclusions of a number of scientific studies that soil moisture was higher at plots with biochar than at plots without biochar application during monitoring period.
