Over 3000 million tons of waste management are generated annually, out of which 25%-30% are Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW). Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW) is generating major issues regarding logistics, provision, and environmental impact. The European Commission, by its Waste Framework Directive, is requesting to increase the recycling rate of the weight by 2020. Since actual material separation techniques require manual quality control and sorting, which is dangerous because workers suffer from exposure to hazardous elements. The desire is to develop a system that will overcome the limitations of current sorting technologies, developing a highly automated processing line, guaranteeing high throughput, and extreme flexibility.
The article presents the Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW) management using an automatic system for recycling the materials. Moreover, the current material separation methods usually require manual quality control to reach a useful purity of raw materials. The idea of the paper aims to go beyond the technological limitations by exploiting the flexibility of a robotic arm and a classification algorithm based on the information coming from hyperspectral cameras and reflectance sensors. Several different material classes which identify the incoming waste for their future recycling, each with a high-value application in the industry, thus increasing their economic value.
In the future, this automated system for sorting the waste will increase the workers' productivity, digitalize the industrial sector, and increase the percentage of recycling CDW up to 90 %.
