Air pollution is one of the main environmental causes for the occurrence of many diseases in the Republic of Bulgaria. Despite the efforts and measures taken by the responsible institutions, polluted air continues to have adverse effects. Bulgaria is still far from achieving levels of air quality that do not pose a risk to humans and the environment. In this context, the purpose of this publication is to evaluate the air quality of the border municipalities between the Republic of Bulgaria and the Republic of Serbia. On this basis, formulate policies for maintaining and / or improving its quality.
The Pressures - State - Responses (PSR) model has been adapted for this purpose. The model (PSR) describes the interaction between society, its business and the environment. It is based on the understanding that society exerts pressure on the environment and thus influences its condition, as it changes both its qualitative parameters and the amount of natural resources. Society responds to these changes through environmental policy, the common economic policy and sectoral policies and through changes in conscious attitudes and behavior towards the environment / public response /. The proposed conceptual framework for environmental assessment is widely applied in European practice. It has also been developed at national level, with adapted indicators published on the website of the Executive Agency for the Environment (EEA). The model (PSR), however, has not been adapted for local / municipal environmental assessment purposes. The reason is that its implementation requires detailed information on both the "pressure", the "state" and the "public response" to environmental issues. The main results are related to the air quality assessment of the border municipalities between Bulgaria and Serbia. Policies have been formulated to maintain and / or improve its quality.
