Transport sector is a fundamental component of the human society. The importance for both the economic and social activities reveals from the fact that through this sector the movement of goods and people is performed in order to satisfy the material and spiritual needs of the society. However, in long term, the transport sector has a significant role in degrading the quality of the air and witch affects directly or indirectly the health of the population. In the period 2007-2018 there was a significant increase in the number of vehicles registered in Romania. This evolution made its mark on the natural environment. The harmful substances emitted in the air as a result of transport, reduce the average life span by a few years. Vehicle are considered harmful factors, especially in the urban environment, where it holds about 60% of the share of polluting emissions. According to current statistics in rural areas, the average life expectancy for people is 4-5 years higher compared to the urban area. The level of emissions from vehicles, mainly represented by exhaust gases, influences the occurrence and aggravation of cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, which represent the main causes of death in Romania. The present paper makes a correlation between the number of vehicles registered in Romania and the mortality rate caused by diseases associated with air pollution. At European level, the application of strategies to reduce the degree of pollution as a result of the use of motor vehicles is foreseen, by carrying out specialized studies and taking the necessary measures.
