The article discusses the features of the natural resource potential of Zhambyl region in the context of resource-saving agricultural use. A component-based assessment of the most important natural resources and conditions for agricultural use was conducted: biological, soil, water and agroclimatic. The territory under consideration was ranked by a set of features to identify the integral indicator of natural resource potential. A map of the natural resource potential of landscapes in the Zhambyl region has been developed. The areas were identified by 7 categories of landscape suitability for various types of agricultural development.
An integrated assessment of the landscape-resource potential established that the territory of Zhambyl region is characterized by non-uniform distribution of the natural-resource potential and the semi-desert and steppe piedmont, steppe and dry-steppe low-mountain and forest-meadow-steppe mid-mountain landscape has the largest total resource potential, while the plain desert ones have the lowest resource potential. It has been found that in the region it is possible to develop branches of agricultural production corresponding to the zonal position. Almost all natural complexes of the region are suitable for grazing farm animals; about 16% of the region?s territory is suitable for hayfields. Irrigated and rainfed farming is possible in 20-25% of the region according to pooled analysis of the components of the natural resource potential.
