Since 2003, the Complex Expedition to study the historical waterways of Russia headed by S.I. Vavilov Institute for the History of Science and Technology of the Russian Academy of Sciences in collaboration with the staff of the Faculty of Geography of Lomonosov Moscow State University performed integrated geoecological exploration of the historical waterways of the Russian Plain. The following sites were explored: the Mariinskaya and Severo-Dvinskaya water systems, Ladoga and Onega canals, the lake-canal system of the Bolshoy Solovetsky Island, the Belozersk-Onega portage waterway, the Vyshnevolotskaya and Tikhvinskaya water systems, the upper and middle part of the historical water route ?From the Varangians to the Greeks? and the upper part of the Great Volga way. The research originality is a comprehensive geo-ecological analysis of the territory, as well as an assessment of the extent of the development, long-term use and transformation of the landscapes of the hydrological network. Measurements were made of the parameters characterizing changes in the hydrological regime and chemical composition of the water due to the construction of artificial structures; local mapping of the modern water system was performed (a vector (digital) map for the study area was created using visual decryption with a retrospective analysis of old and modern maps and satellite images); the geographic coordinates of the water bodies and hydrotechnical monuments were clarified, and registration cards of the latter were created.
