Nowadays, the problem of environmental pollution by heavy and radioactive metals is still remaining crucial. Extraction is one among the most efficient ways to remove the metals from contaminated soil and wastewater. However, this process is complicated by a number of factors, including the difficulty of separating extractants from soil and water, as well as the technological problems in the process. Herein, polymer granules based on crosslinked polyvinyl alcohol and possessing magnetic properties due to the iron particles included in their composition have been prepared in order to solve the said problems. The granules were obtained via the intermolecular crosslinking of polyvinyl alcohol in a non-polar solvent (gasoline). The metallic iron possesses stronger magnetic properties as compared to magnetite, which allows one to separate the polymer granules from large amounts of soil. The fine particles of iron were introduced into the polymer granules during the crosslinking of polyvinyl alcohol. Since the crosslinking of polyvinyl alcohol was performed using glutaraldehyde in an acidic medium, the iron encapsulation was preliminarily performed in order to prevent any effect of the acid on the iron particles. The iron particles were encapsulated by triethylene glycol dimethacrylate with the addition of environmentally friendly, renewable raw materials: flaxseed oil in an aqueous solution of nonionic surfactant, polyvinyl alcohol. The obtained magnetic polymer granules are proposed for using as carriers of extractants, due to the opportunity of their chemical bonding with hydroxyl groups of the polymer.
