The current methodology of geography training in secondary school is aimed at finding opportunities for the implementation of an effective educational process. Recent studies prove the effectiveness of the so-called outdoor lessons. And this is no coincidence, given their impact on learning motivation in training process. They practically operationalize the methodological principle of "learning through experience", especially relevant to modern didactic. However, how can this type of lesson be organized in the context of a centralized classroom educational system? In our opinion, a study excursion (field trip) is a very good option. In comparison with the traditional geography lesson, it shows a number of advantages: it promotes the development of one's own experience, develops an emotional connection with the homeland and the living space, emphasizes the social importance of geography, contributes inevitably to the development of environmental education in students, it is a main aspect of sustainable development education, etc.
Of course, the implementation of a study excursion (field trip) is accompanied by a number of problems and difficulties, which in our view could be overcome and justified. This is the basis for a deeper study of the issue in future. This paper proposes the most general up-to-date characteristic of a study excursion (field trip) in geography training in the context of educational tourism. The author explores the essence, typology and ways of implementation of field trips. Specific possibilities for their realization in the border municipalities of the Republic of Bulgaria with the Republic of Serbia are indicated. The author highlights the promotion of these municipalities as places for extra-curricular activities and defines these territories as suitable for organizing specific educational tourism.
