The massive depletion of natural resources, together with the inefficient use of end-of-life materials, results in the generation of vast amounts of waste. The waste material recycling poses a challenge for the present generation and alteration of current material streams needs to be reconsidered to mitigate the consequent environmental burdens. The construction industry produces several millions of tons of brick debris which remain landfilled or, at the best, are used as a substitute for natural aggregates. However, these intentions usually lead to material downcycling, which does not provide significant environmental benefits. In this paper, several alkali-activated composite materials derived from red-clay ceramic waste are designed and their properties are analyzed. The design procedure takes into account variations in the dosage of alkaline activators of different types. The hardening process of the prepared alkali-activated composite mixtures is monitored using the determination of initial and final setting times. The properties in the hardened state are assessed by the measurement of bulk density, matrix density, open porosity, compressive strength, and flexural strength. The experimental results show that the designed alkali-activated composite materials have both basic physical properties and mechanical parameters comparable with cement based composites and can thus serve as their environmental friendlier substitutes.
