This report provides the findings of analysis intended to determine the reasons for the hydrogen sulfide formation in anaerobic conditions of urban sewage systems. The studies have shown that the technogenic content of sulphates in urban networks and the presence of organic components in wastewater lead to the formation and release of hydrogen sulfide into the atmosphere. Various methods of hydrogen sulfide removal from wastewater have been analyzed. The authors of the report have developed a complex alumina-ferrous coagulant to purify wastewater from hydrogen sulfide based on local raw materials of the natural ferruginous diatomite and alumina production middlings; they have also tested it on model wastewater and demonstrated its effectiveness.
The novelty of the work is in the determination of the coagulant mechanism of action due to the formation of activated ferric hydroxide forms that bind dissolved hydrogen sulfide, as well as aluminum hydroxide that promotes the formation of rapidly precipitating floccules in the presence of amorphous silicon diatomite.
The principal difference of the proposed coagulant from analogs is the use of the ferrous variety of Kazakhstani natural diatomites as a source of the active iron hydroxide form. The extremely active forms of iron compounds formed in an aqueous solution readily interact with a hydrogen sulfide solution to form insoluble sulfides. The use of cakes (containing ferrite and sodium aluminate), alumina production middlings to reach medium alkalinity provides the accelerated course of reactions to form iron sulfides and their precipitation by coagulation with aluminum hydroxide forms.
