In this paper, the authors conducted information analysis of activities of Nobel brothers in the Tambov Region of Russia in order to discover and reconstruct associated memorable places. An important aspect of analysis is identification and detailing of objects suitable for virtual modeling and applying 3D modeling technologies for cultural heritage objects using an open source software platform OpenSimulator. It can be argued that in modern cultural environment there are favorable conditions for the use of virtual-symbolic environment as a tool for preserving and transmitting social and historical memory. Among the advantages of using digital technologies in retaining historical memory didactic potential deserves special attention. It is related to the width of target audience, independence of learners, etc. In this paper, we set and solve a problem of preparing historical, cultural and commemorative material for creating a virtual reconstruction of memorable places on the territory of the Tambov Region associated with activities of Nobel brothers. Written historical sources, including archival materials, concentrated in the State Archive of the Tambov Region, were used to solve this problem. They contain information about activities of the "Nobel Brothers Oil Production Association": allocation of land for warehouses construction; construction permits, including plans; procurement contracts with commercial enterprises, local governments, and so on. At the same time, no photo documents have been identified. Only diesel machines for mills and power plants are presented in the form of drawings on advertising leaflets. However, the similarity of storage facilities for petroleum products makes it possible to use published images of similar facilities from other regions for 3D modeling of cultural heritage objects using Twinmotion software environment for 3D virtual worlds.
