Object. Measurements via borehole inclinometers have been actively used in geotechnical monitoring for more than forty years. Due to the high sensitivity of MEMS sensors to external factors, the passport accuracy characteristics of such equipment are significantly underestimated. At the same time, the analysis and interpretation of data obtained by inclinometers measurements are associated with an assessment of these measurements quality. Identifying the random and systematic components of the total error is the key to improving the efficiency of the inclinometers data interpretation. The study used field measurements of a borehole inclinometer carried out on the tailings dam of The Erdenet Mining Corporation, Mongolia.
Research Methods. The research tool is the mathematical device for assessing the mean square error as a complex function. The work analyzed two types of RMS functions: a linear function and a nonlinear one. A modified Gauss-Newton algorithm was used as an optimization method.
Results. The calculations performed on a computer showed the fast convergence of the optimization algorithm proposed. The actual values of the total measurement error with the borehole inclinometer turned out to be significantly lower than the passport values.
Conclusion. The article calculates the corrected values of the random and systematic components of the measurement error with a borehole inclinometer at the tailings dam of The Erdenet Mining Corporation. The new assessments improve the quality of both the analysis of the existing displacements within the dam body and the quality of the preliminary design calculation of the inclinometric measurements accuracy.
