The present research (landscape, landscape-historical and landscape-ecological) was carried out to determine the landscape-ecological potential of Moscow for the purpose of territorial planning and with a view to developing proposals for the balanced and effective urban development, for ensuring the comfort of living for the city’s population, and protection of the environment and objects of cultural heritage. The research included: a detailed analysis of the natural, cultural and historical features, an assessment of the landscape condition, the identification of the limiting conditions and factors for the development of the territory. The theoretical basis for the present research is the concept of landscape planning, which is based on the objectively existing local and regional physical and geographical differentiation, landscape structure, as well as functional zoning of the territory with regard to the spatial distribution of landscapes and land categories, which are different in their designated use and specifications of use. For the first time, a series of original maps at a scale of 1: 50,000 was compiled for the entire territory of Moscow; proposals were developed for the rational use of the territory of Moscow and siting of major construction facilities with the consideration of landscape conservation.
