The article analyzes the need of a suitable velocity field creation in the cross section profile of the fish pass, which would generate velocity variability for the occurring ichthyofauna with different swimming abilities. In this way, is not only the condition for the maximum vertical velocity fulfilled, but also parts of the profile with slow-flowing water in the bank zone are formed. There are also others recommendations as top width of the water level, doped discharge or recommended longitudinal slope of the fish pass channel. The velocity-area method could be used as a suitable tool by the fish pass design also. This method is commonly used to discharge determination from the measured vertical velocities. Cross section (its parameters as bottom width, bank slopes, roughness coefficient) is designed (optimized) and by the velocity-area method are verified velocities in verticals (whether rest areas by the banks are achieved), needed doped discharge as well as average velocity. Asymmetric cross sections with different bank slopes were investigated and subsequently the results were compared with the values from the 2D mathematical model River2D. The design parameters were considered for the bream fish zone (metapotamal), where in terms of the design of the fish pass, are the strictest parameters – large volume of the water environment of the fish pass, large depths, small velocities, etc. The use of this procedure is especially suitable for the initial design of the fish pass and its cross section profile, where they can be quickly and easily verified compliance with the design parameters before the mathematical modeling itself, e.g. in a 2D model.
