The most common method of wastewater treatment employs biological treatment. This publication focuses on aerobic biological wastewater treatment. There are two basic events - nitrification and denitrification, which most often take place in one or more activation reactors. These processes decompose organic matter in wastewater. All processes mainly take place thanks to the presence of micro-organisms, which are undoubtedly susceptible to a number of external influences.
The paper describes, for example, the effect of temperature and composition of wastewater, including real-life examples of temperatures and chemical analyses of several WWTPs influents and effluents. Therefore, the effect of temperature and wastewater composition on monitored parameter removal efficiency is evaluated. Another influencing factor is the composition of MLSS, which is related to the demands for the synthesis of microorganisms. Last but not least, the method of controlling the activation reactors and the volumes of supplied air in relation to the aeration time is also of crucial importance.
The aim of the article is to summarize the main factors that affect biological treatment. There are examples of real values that are measured in practice at several WWTPs and their evaluation. The treatment process sometimes works even in conditions that are not identical with the data from the literature. This is proved by the real values of some of the mentioned indicators.
