The work is devoted to the study of fuel ash as components of composite cements and building mixtures based on them. The use of bottom ash as raw material is an urgent problem. On the one hand, their use in production solves the issue of creating resource and energy saving technologies and increasing the efficiency of cements and concretes. The use of ash makes it possible to improve the properties of cements, bricks, products from aerated and heavy concrete, light aggregates, and the quality of road construction. The genesis of fuel bottom ash makes it difficult to widely use it using the best known technologies. The peculiarities of the chemical and mineralogical composition of this ash cause additional studies to increase the activity of the ash filler in cement compositions. Ash activation makes it possible to use it in the future as a component in the composition of a cement binder, as well as materials and products based on it. Opportunities for utilization of bottom ash - waste from thermal power plants - are associated with approaches to increasing the efficiency of its use using mechanical and physicochemical methods. Mechanical activation is aimed at obtaining non-fired binder particles, primarily with smaller sizes. They have higher solubility and reactivity. The possibility of chemical activation is also appealing to researchers. To use bottom ash in mortars and concretes based on a cement binder, it is necessary to conduct an in-depth analysis of the material and granulometric compositions. Alkaline (chemical) activation can make it possible to exclude one of the most expensive operations from the technological process of obtaining building composites.
