Soil and groundwater resources are natural resources of high ecological value, their protection against chemical degradation and pollution being of major interest and requesting a new methodology based on risk instruments.
The need to implement methods for qualitative and quantitative assessment of ecotoxicological risk resides in objective assessment of effects pollutants have on ecosystems, to limit the transfer of xenobiotics to lower and upper levels of the food chain. In this sense, the team of the Environmental Protection Laboratory within INCD INSEMEX Petro?ani has developed a methodology for assessing the ecotoxicological risk for contaminated soil and groundwater. This methodology allows the quantification of pollutants’ effects on environmental factors by preliminary analysis of environmental pollutants’ toxicity, complexity, evolution and magnitude of pollutant on the studied environmental factor and possible effects on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.
The developed methodology comprises four major stages, being based on a sequential approach that ensures fast resolutions and minimal use of resources. The steps and information contained can be extended to reduce uncertainty and improve motivation to make a strategic decision. The ecotoxicological risk assessment methodology supports researchers, hydrogeologists, pedologists, environmental engineers who want to use an analytical tool to quantify effects of pollutants on the environment. By applying the proposed methodology in a certain geographical area, depending on the level of risk found, measures can be developed to reduce pollution and choose the best methods for depollution of soil and groundwater.
