One of the circular economy’s principals is to «keep products and materials in use». Geopolymerization technology is promising enough to support this principle as it exploits wastes and by-products as alternative raw materials streams. However, the challenge that must be overcome to commercialize geopolymers is the substitution of the caustic alkaline solution that activates the aluminosilicate raw material. The introduction of solid activators in the process has given great results. This paper deals with the synthesis of a CDW glass-based solid activator, a low embodied energy powder, rich in sodium silicate Na2SiO3, that has been developed through a simple procedure and it is capable to activate the aluminosilicate precursor. Glass cullet, NaOH and water were mixed together to create a pulp that through a mild heat treatment converted to the solid powder. Different synthesis parameters were tested (temperature and treatment duration) and different SiO2/Na2O molar ratios were examined (1 and 2). The prepared solid activators were evaluated through FTIR and XRD quantitative analysis and they were tested for fly ash geopolymerization. One-part geopolymers prepared using only the CDW glass-based solid activator treated at 150oC, with molar ratio SiO2/Na2O equal to 1, showed compressive strength close to 32 MPa.
