One of the main monitored parameters related to road traffic safety is the visibility of road facilities and how they are perceived by drivers. Areas where visibility is suddenly limited, or where road sections become unclear due to inadequate design and technological arrangements, pose significant safety risks. Monitoring the optical properties of the applied coating surface, particularly its retroreflection and colour, is crucial for traffic safety. The paper describes research leading to the design of a system of measures to increase overall road safety and reduce the accident rates through the use of special retroreflective guardrail beams with retroreflective coating. As part of the research, experiments were also carried out to test the effect of the retroreflective guardrail beams on drivers' attention, as well as their potential improvement in visual perception using special eye-tracking system on site. Integrating new technologies into road facilities and investigating the human factor in various situations/driver conditions will significantly reduce risks in critical road sections. Additionally, an extended service life for road facilities should be achieved as a secondary outcome of this research.
