ASSESSMENT OF THE QUALITY AND PRODUCTIVITY OF LODGEPOLE PINE GROWN IN THE WESTERN PART OF LATVIA

(STEF92 Technology, 2024-11-01, Linards Sisenis, Irina Pilvere, Baiba Jansone, Dace Brizga, Edgars Dubrovskis)

The research aims to examine the pace of growth of lodgepole pine, the amount of damage caused by biungulates and the quality of trunks for lodgepole pine provenances growing in the western part of Latvia in the areas around Ugale and Kuldiga, identifying the most damage-resistant and promising provenances for cultivation in Latvia. In Latvia, foresters and plant breeders have been working for years to increase the quality and productivity of local tree species, while assessing various forest stand management patt...

FIRE SAFETY IN PEAT EXTRACTION SITES IN LATVIA

(STEF92 Technology, 2024-11-01, Dace Brizga, Edgars Dubrovskis, Olga Miezīte, Linards Sisenis, Kristine Kirsbauma)

Today about 10% of Latvia's territory is occupied by peatlands (645,100 ha), but the extraction of peat happens in only 4% (25,739 ha) of the total. In regulatory documents peat bogs are mentioned as having a very high probability of flammability (in the context of climate change and other natural elements: drought, heat, lightning and deliberate or unintentional human activity). This indicates the need to improve fire safety by conducting research and improving regulatory frameworks. The aim of the study was to a...

NATURAL REGENERATION OF PINUS SYLVESTRIS L. FROM SEED TREES IN POOR MINERAL SOILS

(STEF92 Technology, 2024-11-01, Olga Miezit, Edgars Dubrovskis, Dace Brizga, Aija Berzina)

In economic forests, the productivity of forest stands should be increased as much as possible, because the global demand for timber is growing every year. Planted forest trees can be realized using the advantages of selection, naturally regenerated - faster growth can be achieved by improving the growing conditions and limiting factors that reduce or delay the formation of growth. Data were collected in 6-year-old P.sylvestris forest stands Cladinoso-callunosa and Vacciniosa. The plots were established in an area...

CLEARCUT FELLING STOCK DETERMINATION COSTS, PRECISION AND TIME CONSUMPTION IN HYLOCOMIOSA - CASE STUDY IN MIDDLE PART OF LATVIA

(STEF92 Technology, 2018-06-20, Edgars Dubrovskis)

Forests are the national wealth of Latvia that is to be preserved and multiplied to meet the ecological, economic and social needs of society. Latvian residents with the forest has always linked the economic, cultural and emotional bonds that have developed over centuries. Forest performs essential ecological and social functions at both national and international level, and providing adequate growing and cutting stock measurements, we can estimate different growth factor influence. Historically this data delivere...

INFLUENCE OF WIND-STORM ON FOREST COMPOSITION: CASE STUDY IN NORTH-WESTERN LATVIA

(STEF92 Technology, 2018-11-20, Edgars Dubrovskis)

Cyclonic wind storms will become increasingly more common in Europe, impacting the financial values of forests due to increasing risk as well as forest composition. Aim of our study was to characterize the impact of such a storm and post-storm regeneration in hemiboreal forests, Latvia, using data from State forests service and Latvian State Forests. Forest massive with notable influence of the storm of 2005 was selected ? in it altogether 2573 ha, i.e. 13.7% from the forest area was damaged. In most of the affect...

TREE STEMS QUALITY AND SANITARY CONDITION OF PINUS SYLVESTRIS L., PICEA ABIES (L.) H. KARST. AND BETULA PENDULA ROTH ON AFFORESTED AGRICULTURAL AREAS

(STEF92 Technology, 2017-06-20, Olga Miezite, Edgars Dubrovskis, Jelena Ruba)

For unused agricultural land afforestation are several aims like, rational land use, rural landscape diversification, decrement of environment pollution, increasing recreation possibilities and other but also can be established or special purposes planted forest stands as plantation forest. In Latvia during year 2015 State Forest Service (VMD) registered 3.4 thou. ha of afforested agricultural land and 2.7 thou. ha were registered as plantation forests. Aim of research is to analyse sanitary condition of agricultu...
