AFFORESTATION OF AGRICULTURAL LANDS IN BAUSKA DISTRICT, LATVIA

(STEF92 Technology, 2025-12-27, Inga Straupe, Līga Liepa, J. Freimanis, Dagnija Lazdiņa)

In 2021 there were approximately 227,360 ha of abandoned land in Latvia. Bauska district has very fertile soil and active farmers, but despite this, agricultural lands are being afforested. The aim of the research is to analyze and evaluate the reasons and results of afforestation of agricultural lands in Bauska district in order to assess under what afforestation conditions the forest is most successfully grown. Seven properties were afforested in 2019, with a total area of 23.48 ha. Each property was divided int...

CASE STUDY OF RIPARIAN VEGETATION AFFECTING WATER QUALITY OF SMALL STREAMS IN LATVIA

(STEF92 Technology, 2021-12-20, Marcis Saklaurs, Stefanija Dubra, Līga Liepa)

Riparian forests are important ecosystems providing a spectrum of ecosystem services such as erosion control, nutrient modification and improvement of water quality in adjacent streams. In many countries management of riparian forests are restricted to protect aquatic biota as vegetation, especially woody plants provide nutrient uptake from soil preventing stream water over-enrichment. However not all tree and ground cover vegetation species carry the same positive effect on stream quality. Aim of our study was to...

ECONOMICAL EVALUATION OF SELECTED LANDSCAPE CUTTING IN SCOTS PINE PINUS SYLVESTRIS L. IN MEZAPARKS, RIGA

(STEF92 Technology, 2020-12-20, Inga Straupe, Davis Rudzitis, Līga Liepa)

The aim of the study is to carry out the management and economic evaluation of the Scots pine Pinus sylvestris L. forest stand in Mezaparks, Riga. The aim of the landscape selective cutting is to improve the resilience of mature stands, while increasing the visual attractiveness of the stand. Riga?s Mezaparks has been used for recreation and other social activities for long time. To continue serving social, ecological, economical and other interests of the city, it is important, especially for the urban forestry, ...

THE DYNAMICS OF VAGETATION DEVELOPMENT IN SHELTERWOOD STRIP CUTTING IN JELGAVA FOREST AREA, LATVIA

(STEF92 Technology, 2020-09-20, Inga Straupe, Līga Liepa, Evelina Skrastina)

The shelterwood strip cutting is the main felling technique, where the stand is cut in shelterwood the width of which does not exceed the average tree height of the stand. The information obtained in the study reflects how the characteristic forest vegetation develops, depending on the location and orientation of the object, as well as the cleaning type of forest residues. The development of vegetation shows which type is the most efficient and in which the vegetation develops the fastest. Two North-South (N-S) an...

TREE BIOMASS IN OVER-MATURE UNMANAGED CONIFEROUS FORESTS IN LATVIA

(STEF92 Technology, 2020-09-20, Laura Ķēniņa, Ieva Jaunslaviete, Līga Liepa, Inga Straupe, Kārlis Bičkovskis)

Importance of unmanaged forests for biodiversity aspects in unquestionable, while their role in climate change mitigation is still unclear due to the large heterogeneity of these forests in different bioclimatic regions; therefore, requiring data of biomass distribution for their inclusion in national and regional carbon reporting systems. The aim of our study was to assess the live biomass distribution and amount of dead wood in over-mature Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies (K.) L.) ...
