INDUSTRIAL HEAVY METAL POLLUTION AND HAZARDOUS EFFECTS ON ECOLOGY: WASTE MANAGEMENT PERSPECTIVE

(SGEM Scientific GeoConference, 2006, M. E. Argun, S. Dursun, C. Ozdemir, M. Karatas)

In this article, pollution of ecological systems with heavy metals and their hazardous effects were investigated as a view of waste management. Several industries from mining to electroplating produce large volumes of wastewater containing heavy metals. These wastewater cause accumulation of heavy metals through ecological circle in soil, plants and animals which directly enter human food chains presenting a high hazardous effect on consumers. They may cause severe damage of the kidney, reproductive system, liver,...

REMOVAL OF COD WITH DICHLOROMETHANE AND TETRACHLORINEETHYLENE IN THE UP -FLOW ANAEROBIC SLUDGE BED REACTORS (UASB)

(SGEM Scientific GeoConference, 2006, C. Ozdemir, S. Dursun, N. Sen)

Low concentration of chlorinated aliphatic compounds may be found in wastewater and contaminated soils from different industrial sources and in the air arisen from these type sources. Low levels of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC)’s could be removed by adsorption, incineration or biofiltration methods. These methods have some disadvantages with low removal efficiency or high operation cost. Chlorine has been removed from the chlorinated aliphatic compounds by biological methods at anaerobic conditions. The aim o...

GEOCHEMICAL STUDY ON AN ALLUVIAL AQUIFER SYSTEM OF THE NAKDONG RIVER BASIN FOR RIVER BANK FILTRATION IN KOREA

(SGEM Scientific GeoConference, 2004, G. Y. Kim, Y. K. Koh, CH. Kim, D. S. Bae, H.S. Kim)

As a part of the national project for the development of sustainable water resources, the geochemical studies on an alluvial aquifer system developed in the vicinity of the Nakdong River were carried out for the feasibility study of river bank filtration in Korea. Through the river bank filtration, we intend to secure the sustainable water resources by increasing river water quality polluted from industrialization and preventing an excessive groundwater extraction from alluvial aquifer with defining the most optim...

PECULIARITIES OF THE GROUNDWATER FLOW REGIME IN REGION OF THE KCM-PLOVDIV

(SGEM Scientific GeoConference, 2004, A. Benderev, I. Petkov, B. Mihaylova)

In the connection with work on the International project NATO Science for Peace 973739 "Dynamics, evolution and limitation of heavy metal water pollution in the Plovdiv region (Bulgaria)" a complex ecological investigation was accomplished. The main parts of the work have been related to clarification of the hydrogeological peculiarities in order to assess conditions and risk of contamination of the ground waters. For this purposes in the period 2001-2003 a monitoring network for seasonal and monthly observations ...

CHARACTERIZATION OF THE WASTE WATERS FROM “PERNIK” CENTRAL PREPARATION PLANT (BULGARIA) AND THEIR ECOLOGICAL EFFECTS

(SGEM Scientific GeoConference, 2003, M. G. Yossifova)

Twenty three (23) waste water samples, seven (7) soil and twenty two (22) plant ones from the region of the “Pernik” Central Preparation Plant (CPP) are a subject of study. A season method of sampling has been used . The water samples have been taken as follows: 1) water coming in the plant for preparation; 2) water, used during the dressing; 3) water used to transport the slime and fly ash; 4) water, running out of the slime storage; 5) water, that is draining. They have been tested by: ICP for Hg, Al, Cd, As...
